July is Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride Month is celebrated every July to honor the history, achievements, and experiences of the disabled community while advocating for full inclusion and equal rights. The month-long observance commemorates the signing of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990.

History]

The first Disability Pride Day was celebrated in Boston in October 1990, shortly after the ADA was passed. The broader national month-long observance was established in July 2015 to mark the 25th anniversary of the ADA. The month serves as an opportunity to push back against ableism, challenge harmful stereotypes, and celebrate disability identity as a natural part of human diversity.
The Disability Pride Flag
The official Disability Pride Flag features a charcoal black background representing the mourning and rage of those who have faced ableist violence and abuse. It includes five diagonal colored stripes that represent the diversity of the disabled community: [
  • Red: Physical disabilities
  • Gold: Neurodivergence
  • White: Invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
  • Blue: Psychiatric and mental health conditions
  • Green: Sensory disabilities (such as deafness or blindness)
How to Observe
